Australian Geographic "From Trash to Treasure"
Australian Geographic in its Jan-Mar 2010 journal published an article on innovative recycling of a range of products. The article, by Tom Curtis, highlights the growing number of organisations involved in creative reuse of materials as a way reuse products that might otherwise end up in lanfill.
This article follows on from a report to the Federal Government by Hyder Consulting, Waste and Recycling in Australia which rated the need for action to improve recycling rates for concrete, roofing materials and timber as a "very high priority". Other products also included in this priority were televisions, fluorescent lights, batteries and white goods.
Examples of creative reuse of products include: street sighs turned into stools, posters into shoulder bags, milk bottles into decking, fly ash into bricks, circuit boards into lamps.
The article also highlights the growing number of organisations invloved in this area, often at the community level such as Freecycle, Reverse Garbage as well as highlighting sources of information such as ECO-Buy and suppliers of recycled content products. It is also worth noting that internationally there are some large companies operating in this area such as Terracycle which supplies companies such as Walmart in the US.
